Adire alabela, meaning wax resist, is the Yoruba version of batik. Using foam rubber — melted wax is applied to the fabric. The fabric is then dyed and the process is repeated with the next color. Batik is a technique used all over the world. It’s use in Nigeria is to shorten the tedious traditional process Adire Eleko (done with cassava paste and chicken feather) to keep the traditional Adire styles, story and patterns from fading away, from dying off.

Teaching the workshop is Oluwaseyi Awoyomi, first daughter of Nike Okundaye, (Owner of Nike Art Gallery), a world renowned Nigerian Artist. Known as Simply Shayee, she will share her rich knowledge of the diverse crafts and culture of Nigeria. It will be an immersive hands-on experience, a rare opportunity to learn some of the indigenous arts of Nigeria. Shayee’s goal is to feed the interest of cultural diversity through textile art, dance and food.

The course is taught over 2 days to allow the participants to fully express their artistic intentions. Part 1 on Friday June 16, from 4 – 8 PM will be an introduction to the process and techniques of batik. Shayee will have examples of traditional designs on hand. Part 2 on Saturday from 12 – 4 PM will begin the dying process. Some pieces are overdyed several times. Pieces will be processed, dried and ready for wearing by Sunday. Take a dance class and show off your artistry!

The cost of the class is $255 plus a $15 materials fee. Spaces are limited so register early!

We will offer a scholarship to this class based on financial need. Please send an overview of your budget. Monthly expenses and monthly income. And a brief essay (500 words) about why you would like to take this class. Send your budget and essay to mawustudio@gmail.com. In the subject line please put: Adire Workshop Scholarship 2017. Deadline for applying is June 9, 2017.
