Talking Wolof with Da'African Village

A Speaker’s guide to Senegal, West Africa

Talking Wolof With Da' African Village

A basic guide to speaking the language of West Africa

Talking Wolof with Da’African Village by Serigne “Mara” Diakhate was inspired by many years of serving as a tour guide, and leading thousands of tourists from the United States and Europe to his homeland of Senegal, and other countries within West Africa including: The Gambia, Mali, Mauritania, Ghana and Guinea. Well known in the travel and tourism industry, Mara has guided celebrities such as Serena Williams, Jessie Jackson, Lauryn Hill, Ky-Mani Marley, Jimmy Cliff, and many others.

It was during this time that Mara realized the need to create a comprehensive book entitled ‘Talking Wolof with Da’African Village‘ that helps those traveling abroad to communicate more effectively with the people of West Africa.

About the Author

Serigne Diakhate

Serigne “Mara” Diakhate is a native of Dakar, Senegal, and currently resides in Los Angeles, California, and in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is a world traveler, entrepreneur, and Pan-Africanist. Mara is also the Founder /CEO of Da’African Village which serves as “a bridge of togetherness” between Africa and the United States.

His mission is to share the rich cultures and traditions of West Africa with the rest of the world. He believes that ‘if a person does not know where he came from, then he does not know where he’s going.‘ This is why educating others by equipping them with the knowledge of the history, cultures, and languages of West Africa has become his life’s work.

“Many years ago, during a tour to Senegal, I took a group of Americans to my grandparents’ home,” said Mara, “My grandma was very excited to meet and talk to them, and I was responsible for translating all communications. I taught the group a few words so that they could communicate directly with the family which made my grandma so happy! Seeing the joy in her eyes, made me realize how important and crucial writing this book is. It would also help in my mission of building a bridge of togetherness.”

“The book is written in an easy phonetic format for all English-speaking people,” Mara added, “And I carefully created a structure using the most useful day-to-day words and basic conversations. Anyone can pick up the book and begin speaking Wolof right away!”

“My goal is to reach people worldwide looking to travel to Senegal and teach them to become fluent in Wolof, our native tongue, in efforts to communicate effectively and develop relationships within the Senegalese community. I am currently working diligently to introduce this book as a language course curriculum to colleges and universities worldwide.”

I write this review while I am in Senegal and I have found this book to be very helpful. I take it with me everywhere! I wanted to come to Senegal and communicate in Wolof (and not just French) and this book is invaluable! The author gives you necessary words and phrases that are easy to apply when practicing your conversations. And you can tell by reading the book that the author put his heart and soul into this language guide. I recommend to anyone who is interested in the language and culture of Senegal.

Great Book for reconnecting back to Africa

I found this book very helpful on my trip to Senegal, I didn’t know that Senegal is the nearest African country to the Caribbean, North American, and South American nations. Since all ships traveled by wind back in the day this means that Senegal was the origin of America’s slave trade. I love how easy this book was to read and pronounce Wolof. Every person from the U.S., Caribbean, North and South American nations should purchase this book, so we all can learn Wolof and reconnect with our roots. I brought my brother to Senegal this year and he cried tears of joy as the “Talking Wolof with Da'African Village” helped us navigate the country while we learned who we truly are as the tall kings of Africa.

Great book!

This is a great way to help native languages survive as the world is facing the huge issue of endangered languages. Wolof is a language spoken in Senegal, it is the main native language, and the author does a great job putting the essentials of this beautiful language in this book. I love it!
